Where we work

For each suburb we asked the state's district layer, its soil-landscape map and the planning portal's acid sulfate layer what they return at five points, the centre and one a short way north, south, east and west. Five points do not survey every lot. All five points in Merewether fell inside the NEWCASTLE Mine Subsidence District, four of five in Wallsend and three of five in Hamilton, and none in Beresfield. Acid sulfate soils classes appeared in all four suburbs: Class 3 in Beresfield and Class 4 in Hamilton.

One council, four suburb pages

The four suburbs are in one council area, so one development control plan applies to all of them. What differs is which mapped land its clauses and the local plan reach. We did not read the local plan's own text, only the council's and the regulator's pages about it, and a single lot is looked up with them. Lake Macquarie is served, but we make no claim about its council or its plans.

Suburbs without a page

The rest of the City of Newcastle is covered on the same terms, among them New Lambton, Mayfield, Maryland, Fletcher, Adamstown and Lambton. Pages were written where a source gave a suburb something specific to say. The others would repeat what the four already tell, and none has been ruled out.
